The South Buckinghamshire village of Gerrards Cross lies just 19 miles from London and has a rich history. The County History of Buckinghamshire, in 4 volumes, reported that a race meeting first took place in the village in 1734, although few further details are known. The races were held on Gerrards Cross Common, which is close to the Iron Age fortified encampment of Bulstrode Park Camp. Gerrards Cross was formed by taking sections of 5 surrounding villages, principally Chalfont St Peter as well as Fulmer, Iver, Langley Marish and Upton. The name Gerrards Cross comes from the Gerrard family who owned the 17th century Manor House.
